• The Spiral pattern is an omnipresent feature of the universe. The genetic coding of all known living organisms is contained in the spiral helix pattern of DNA molecules. On the human body we have a spiral pattern on our fingertips, the heart muscle is arranged in a spiral form, and the pattern is also present at the crown of our heads, among many other parts of the body. Its repeating pattern emanates up outwards as well as infinitely inwards into itself. From molecular bonds to massive galaxies, the whirling spiral seems to occupy a significant role in the architecture of the universe. Its importance as a key design element of the visible world must have been recognized by ancient peoples, as most societies since the dawn of history have featured the spiral as a sacred symbol in their artwork.
  • One of the many things I find interesting about spirals is that they seem to occur when a substance is transported from one state to another or between locations. For example, water must move in a spiral whirlpool when a void or drain opens below it. Spirals also appear where opposing forces come together, such as the violent swirl of a tornado that is born and fed by the union of rising warm air and falling cool air. A similar larger scale process occurs in the formation of hurricanes as rising warm air over tropical seas feeds the growth of the massive spiral storms.
  • When one becomes familiar with spiritual traditions and practices one may discover the reality of astral or spiritual dimensions, and the spiral can be seen as a symbol of our link to these higher worlds. When the conscious mind detaches from the physical domain and travels into the astral or spiritual realm, it can often feel as if one was being sucked into a swirling portal, like a spiritual tornado, which transports one’s consciousness to a higher world. Like Dorothy and Toto travelling by Cyclone from Kansas to the fantastical World of Oz, many individuals have had the experience of being swept up into an ethereal maelstrom before arriving in a strange and non-earthly realm.
  • In addition to being an essential part of the design of our visible universe, the Spiral is a symbol of transcendence, and the link between humanity and divinity. This new work titled “Spiral” represents this very idea, as it depicts a spiral staircase coming down from the heavens providing a path for the humans to transcend their earthly sphere.
